Scientific Investigation
Cells: The building blocks of life.
2
Scientists What do they do? Make observations Develop questions
Plan and conduct investigations Collect and analyze data Draw conclusions
3
The Scientific Method Think of safety 1st!
Problem/Purpose: why you are conducting the experiment. Hypothesis: an educated guess before conducting the experiment. Materials: what you will need to do the experiment. Procedures: step by step experiment directions. Observations: recording charts, notes, tables Conclusion: what exactly happened in the experiment and was your hypothesis correct?

Science Process Skills
Observing is using one or more of your 5 senses in order to learn more about something. Example: size, shape, color, or texture. Communicating involves sharing the information that you discover. This information may be shared orally or in written form, such as a journal, picture, or graph. Comparing is noticing the likenesses and differences between things that are observed. Ordering is arranging objects so that each one is in a certain place. The objects can be arranged by using traits such as size and weight. Categorizing is putting an object into a group based on one or more of its traits.

Experiment Vocabulary
A Constant is something that stays the same in an experiment. A Variable is something that changes in an experiment. There are 2 types. An Independent Variable is something you choose to change in the experiment. A Dependent Variable is something that changes in an experiment as a result of the experiment itself. A Trial is when you repeat your experiment to make sure the results are the same.

Cells Cells are the smallest structure of living things and are considered the building blocks of life. There are 2 types of cells: Animal Plant Animal and Plant Cells have similarities and differences.
7
Animal Cells Animal Cells are round in shape. They have 4 organelles:
Nucleus: controls the actions of the cell, including reproduction and replication; it is located near the center of the cell. It is considered the brain of the cell. Cytoplasm: jellylike liquid between the nucleus and cell membrane.
8
Animal Cells Cell Membrane: a thin skinned flexible barrier that controls movement of materials inside and outside of the cell. Vacuole: holds food and waste within the cell. It is like a closet or trashcan.

Plant Cells Plant cells are rectangular in shape.
They also have a Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Cell Membrane, and Vacuole like an animal cell. What makes them different is: Cell Wall: gives plant support and structure. Chloroplast: holds chlorophyll which allows plants to make their own food.
