1 ARGUMENTATIVE RHETORIC
WHAT YOU SAY, HOW YOU SAY IT, AND TO WHOM YOU’RE TALKING – CONVINCE AND PERSUADE AND A LITTLE BIT OF MIND CONTROL

4 Let’s see how it works So, I looked up the popular "got milk?" ads that I used to see in magazines all the time. Check out these examples of Ethos, Logos and Pathos. All used at the same time to convey the message and get you to drink a glass of milk.

5 The Rock got milk.

6 Ethos is credibility...most professionals, leaders, & X-Men are assumed to be skillful and trustworthy. Since Hugh Jackman is a celebrity, (and freakin Wolverine) then it makes the advertisement credible. People think, “If this fabulous person drinks milk, then it must be a good thing for me. Damn, I mean look at his arms…”

7 PATHOS Pathos could be found in different ways. The emotion in Oscar De La Hoya’s face is very strong and confident, which kind of sets the mood for the ad. Plus, he’s wearing the flag and staring right into the camera. The last line of the text says ”There aint nothing uglier than an overweight lightweight.” we can explain pathos as "the emotion of the message”. Certain BUZZ words or a play on words like …Hercules… and …strong muscles… gives the ad a strong, I can kick your ass because I drink milk kind of feeling.

8 Logos is explained as "The logical message
Logos is explained as "The logical message. It appeals to facts, figures, and experts." The ad says that “Some studies suggest…teenagers…” This statement gives the ad a sense of professional/expert advice. IT’S SCIENTIFIC.

9 Think about it

10 In your groups… Make a list of the first RETAIL PRODUCTS that pop into your heads. Anything you can think of that you buy. Write them down (at least 5) and share them with the class in 3 minutes. NOW… Choose one and describe the commercial. Write down everything you can remember from it.

11 How to win an argument without pissing someone off.
If you argue correctly, you will make the person believe you are RIGHT, even when you’re not.

12 What goes in a ARUGMENTATIVE Essay
State your position – Pro or Con Argument Counter Claim Follow the outline/rubric Add in some ethos, pathos and logos

13 What do you need for your argument?
-

14 Argument MULTI-PARAGRAPH ESSAY! (minimum of 5…)
It’s what you write in it to CONVINCE, Persuade, and Argue that YOUR side is RIGHT. Use QUOTES, FACTS, STATISTICS – anything that is EVIDENCE for your side of the argument. This is your LOGOS. Add in some emotional language and opinions and that’s your PATHOS. If you are credible – that’s your ETHOS.

15 Any Questions?

16 What NOT to write in your essay.
Seriously.

17 Don’t automatically assume the reader knows the prompt you have been given.
Don’t forget to explain your point. (“What do you mean by that?”) Don’t use the BIG WORDS if you don’t know how to spell them and use them correctly. Don’t write in the first person – keep your “I” out of it!!!

18 Do NOT use the following phrases
By the way, That Sure, I personally believe… Back in the day… I recall back 2 weeks ago, Out there… I have to agree… Today’s Modern World… Hello, my name is… I am going to tell you… Have a nice day.

19 And these too… My point is… I think Honestly In short
I disagree with the quote It matters because OMG, LOL,LMAFO ;) Like The thing is… I say that because… This one time…

20 This quote means that… Any version of this will be marked down.
This quote says The article/author/quote/statistic/fact/information/etc. explains/proclaims/states/justifies/clarifies/explicates/de fends/supports/affirms/expresses/etc. Start after “that”. For example. This quote means that He was a super awesome guy.

21 Never start a sentence with:
Well, So, But, And, Since Or Like

22 Take the next 10 minutes to FIND SYNONYMS FOR THESE WORDS!!!
STUFF THINGS GOOD BAD

23 MLA FORMAT Timesnewroman Size 12 Double spaced 1 inch margins
In the right hand corner: First and Last name Teacher’s name Title of assignment Date (due date) Header with Last name and page #

24 Fix your grammar

25 Thesis Sentence The thesis statement is the theme of your essay put into a sentence. It is the departure point of your argument. Everything in your expository essay stems from and refers back to your thesis statement.

26 Where does it go? The thesis statement generally shows up in either of two places in the opening paragraph of your expository essay:

27 Funnel or ending? in the last sentence of the introductory paragraph (this kind of introduction is called the “funnel introduction”; it funnels down to the thesis at the end of the paragraph). as the very first sentence in the introductory paragraph (I recommend this approach for SAT- essay writing).

28 Chocolate ice cream The thesis statement always has a point of view.
To express a point of view, however, is not to state a “mere opinion” for example, “I hate chocolate ice cream” IT’S A DEFINITIVE POINT OF VIEW!!

29 Should is a no-no When composing a thesis statement, avoid using the words “should” or “must.” Such terms transform the thesis from a thoughtful statement into a moralizing one. Moralizing or preaching thesis statements are never successful. Your thesis statement, rather, should represent a well-considered point of view. No “shoulding” all over the place, please.

30 Consider the following two attempts at responding to the following SAT-essay prompt:
Is it more valuable for people to fit in than to be unique and different?

31 Which one sounds better?
It is right for everyone to be unique and different. While it is easier for many people to go along with the majority, and although it’s important to “fit in” myself, one gains greater personal growth and more exciting experiences when not conforming to the crowd.

32 Statement #1 Let’s take a look at Statement 1. It gives a mere opinion to which someone can respond in only one of two ways. One can agree (Yes, it is right.) or disagree (No, it is wrong.). Either way, the statement does not begin a conversation but rather shuts it down from the beginning

33 Statement #2 Statement 2 offers much more to a writer and a reader. First, look at the structure of the sentence. It is a complex sentence Looking at the sentence from its structure alone, you can see how much richer it is.

34 Write Well 
