Vocab List- pg. 6 Influences on Health Factors that can……. Heredity- all the traits that are passed biologically from parent to child. Example?

Gender- Male or Female -Can influence your health because risk factor may vary between males & females. Environment- all of the physical & social conditions that surround a person and can influence that person’s health. Consider: indoor & outdoor surroundings -air you breathe -water you drink -sun exposure -noise exposure

Social Environment- the people you spend time with- your family, friends, classmates & others in your community. -Who taught YOU basic health lessons? Consider- Healthy support system = Healthy life Culture- the beliefs and patterns of behaviors that are shared by a group of people and passed from generation to generation. -nation, region or ethnic group -Example: Food? Customs?

Media- all forms of communication that provide news and entertainment. -television, music, video games, movies, internet, magazines, newspaper, etc. Example: Television- the average teenager watches 20 hours of TV a week. What are some positive & negative effects?

Technology- Positive- medical advances & education Negative- too much time on-line Healthcare- available medical care: doctors, nurses, dentists & therapists

Behavior- Habits – a behavior that is repeated so often that it becomes almost automatic. -Healthy habits vs. Unhealthy habits -remember behaviors can change.

Evaluating Health Risks Risk factor- any action or condition that increases the likelihood of injury, disease, or other negative outcome. 3 Ways to evaluate a risk factor: -Consider both short-& long-term. -Decide whether you can control the risk factor. -Analyze the possible benefits & risks of a decisions.
