3
Renewable Energy and Aquaponics
In some cases, cost of investment for equipment may take many years to see return As the cost of energy increases the use and cost of alternative methods should decrease Eliminating cost of energy increases profitability Basic outdoor aquaponics systems Low energy needs Water pump Air pump Large commercial systems High energy needs – greenhouse Heating Cooling Ventilation
4
Anaerobic Digesters and Biogas
Convert waste to biogas (methane and CO2) Ex : cow manure from a dairy; vegetable wastes Used to heat greenhouse and generate electricity Amount of biogas generated directly related to amount of raw manure available Dairy cow generates lbs manure per day = kwh per day
5
Wood and Waster Burners for Heat
Furnaces that burn wood can heat air/water More efficient to heat water Water can pass through heat exchanger to heat the air Do not use fossil fuel No net carbon increase New models are clean burning Also available are models that burn corn and grain but this has increased food costs and makes viability questionable
6
Geothermal Energy Heat from the earth
Tapping geothermal energy is affordable and sustainable Geothermal hot spring water can be used to heat greenhouses and water in the aquaponic system Technology is rapidly advancing Cost of installation is high
8
Solar Energy Run air and water pumps
Payback for installation of solar was 25 years in 2008 Costs should decreases as production and popularity increase
