Presentation on theme: "What would happen if there wasn’t a moon?"— Presentation transcript:

1 What would happen if there wasn’t a moon?
The moon actually stabilizes the tilt of the Earth’s axis. Tilt is responsible for seasons. Mercury, Venus, and Mars – axis swings wildly resulting in wide temperature swings.

2 _____________________________________________?
Features on the moon’s surface include maria (lava flows), craters (impacts of meteoroids), and highlands (mountains). Why are there so many craters on the moon and so few on Earth? Because they were not worn away by water, wind, and other forces.

Features on the moon’s surface include maria (lava flows), craters (impacts of meteoroids), and highlands (mountains). Why are there so many craters on the moon and so few on Earth? Many craters = no atmosphere, no water Because they were not worn away by water, wind, and other forces.

4 ___________________________________________?
The moon is 3,476 km in diameter, a little less than the distance across the contiguous United States or ¼ the size of Earth. Temperatures range from 130 to –180C. Because there is no atmosphere

5 ___________________________________________?
3,476 km (1,700 miles) 130 to –180C (266 to –292F ) Why do temperatures vary so much? No atmosphere = extreme temperatures There is evidence that there is ice on the moon at the poles shielded from sun by crater walls. Because there is no atmosphere

Scientists theorize that a planet-sized object collided with earth about 4.5 billion years ago to form the moon. Material ejected into orbit and joined together to form moon.

Like earth, the moon moves in two ways 1. Rotates on its own axis every 27.3 days 2. Revolves around Earth about once every 27.3 days. Why does a moon day equal a moon year? Look at the numbers! The lunar day is longer than the Earth day because the Moon orbits in the same direction the Earth spins. This is analogous to the minute hand on a watch crossing the hour hand at 12:00 and then again at about 1:05½ (not at 1:00).

10 Let’s Dance! Everybody Up!

11 Is the moon bigger at some times than others?
This has been a topic of debate for over two thousand years.

12 Optical Illusion! The moon looking bigger at the horizon is an optical illusion. Try viewing the moon through a cardboard tube or a hole punched in a sheet of paper to mask out the landscape--the illusion disappears. If anything, the moon is slightly smaller at the horizon than it is at the zenith, mainly because it's 4,000 miles (the radius of the earth) farther away.

13 _________________________?
The moon reflects light from the sun.

14 _________________________?
The moon reflects light from the sun. Planets reflect sunlight too!

15 ______________________________?
A phase is a different shape of the moon as seen from Earth. Whole set of phases = complete revolution around Earth. Why do we see only parts of the moon’s lit side?

16 __________________________________?
The phase of moon you see depends on how much of the sunlit side of the moon faces Earth.

17 What do you see when the moon is “New?”
The Moon's unlit side is facing the Earth.

18 What is waxing and waning?
A waxing moon gets bigger A waning moon gets smaller Waxing Waning MOON

19 Martian Moons: Phobos and Diemos
