After “Checking the Victim” (steps 1-10)….. Check the scene Tap the victim’s shoulder and shout “Are you OK?” to see if the victim responds. Call 911 or have someone else call 911 Without moving the victim: Look, Listen and Feel for breathing for no more than 10 seconds. If the victim is unconscious, but is breathing and has signs of circulation, place him or her in the recovery position. If the victim is not breathing, roll the victim onto their back while supporting the head and neck. Tilt the head back and lift the chin to open the airway. Look, Listen and Feel for breathing for no more than 10 seconds. If the victim is not breathing …give 2 rescue breaths. If the breaths don’t go in…

If the breaths do not go in the victim is choking. Choking is an emergency in which the airway is blocked.

If the 2 breaths do not go in the victim, reposition the head and reattempt 2 more breaths.

2. If the breaths still do not go in, find the lower part of the breastbone and measure up the width of two fingers.

Place the heel of your other hand on the sternum next to the fingers. Place the other hand on top of the first hand.

Compress the chest 30 times (at a rate of 80 compressions per minute) Look for an object after compressions. Attempt 2 rescue breaths Check A-B-C’s The victim may need rescue breathing if the object is not dislodged. Watch video on unconscious adult and child choking

Conscious and Choking Stand behind the victim and wrap your hands around the victim’s waist. Make a fist with one hand.

Conscious and Choking Place the thumb side of the fist into the victim’s abdomen above the navel. Grab your fist with your other hand.

Conscious and Choking Give 5 quick abdominal thrusts.
Apply pressure inward and upward in one smooth movement.

Conscious and Choking Repeat the cycle of 5 abdominal thrusts and back blows until the object is dislodged. The victim may need rescue breathing after the object is dislodged. Watch video on conscious adult and child choking

Classwork On page 714 in your health book, “What to Do If an Infant or Young Child Is Choking.” List the 2 steps of what you should do if the child cannot cough, cry, or breath. Define abdominal thrusts. Save this to be turned in with your test. Worth 10 points… Also, you should know the first column of vocabulary words on page 750
