KINGDOM PROTISTA
2
General Characteristics
Kingdom Protista contains 115,000 species They are extremely diverse. Single-celled or multicellular Eukaryotic This Kingdom contains organisms that do not fit into the other kingdoms. There are 3 types of Protists. Animal-like Plant-like Fungus-like
3
Animal-like Protists Protists are animal-like because they eat material from their surroundings.
4
Plant-like Protists Protists are plant-like because they are able to make their own food. Contain chlorophyll (green chemical that helps them make food)
5
Fungus-like Protists Protists are fungus-like because they are able to feed on dead or recycled material found in the ground.
6
How do Protists Eat? Autotrophic (make their own food)
Heterotrophic (eat food from their surroundings) Decomposers (eat/feed on dead material)
7
How do Protists Move? Cilia (short hair) Flagella (whip-like tail)
Pseudopodia (false-feet)
8
Cilia Ex: Paramecium
9
Pseudopodia Ex: Amoeba
10
Flagella Ex: Euglena
11
Amoebas are single-celled organisms with no set body shape.
EXAMPLE – Animal-like Amoebas are single-celled organisms with no set body shape. They use pseudopods to move and eat. They feed on small organisms by engulfing. Engulfing means that they surround the organisms and then suck it into their body.
12
EXAMPLE – Plant-like Protist Green Algae and Seaweed-
Each cell has two flagella They live in fresh water. Evolved into the first plants because of their many similarities.
13
Example: Fungus-like Protists
Slime molds and water molds These Protists are decomposers and feed on dead plants and animals. They tend to live in cool, damp places.
