What are Probiotics? Cont.
Microorganisms Bacteria Fungus Probiotics contain microorganisms, most of which are bacteria similar to the beneficial bacteria that occur naturally in the human gut.
5
Types of bacteria Lactobacillus Bifidobacterium Saccharomyces
The most-studied species include Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Saccharomyces. Lactobacillus acidophilus is a form of bacteria that’s found naturally in the body, usually in the intestines, mouth, or female genitals. It’s considered beneficial to human health because the bacteria doesn’t cause disease. Bifidobacterium bacteria are some of the first microbes to take up residence in the gastro-intestinal (GI) tract of newborns, and they dominate the intestines in breast-fed babies. Saccharomyces boulardii is a yeast, which is a type of fungus. Saccharomyces boulardii was previously identified as a unique species of yeast, but is now believed to be a strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker's yeast).

Kefir is Similar to yogurt, this fermented dairy product is a unique combination of goat’s milk and fermented kefir grains. Sauerkraut is made from fermented cabbage (and sometimes other vegetables), sauerkraut is not only extremely rich in healthy live cultures. Miso is one the mainstays of traditional Japanese medicine and is commonly used in macrobiotic cooking as a digestive regulator. Made from fermented rye, beans, rice or barley. The pickle packs a punch of prime probiotics. In the U.S., the term “pickle” usually refers to pickled cucumbers specifically, but most vegetables can be pickled. All of them boast the same briny goodness and probiotic potential. Kimchi is an Asian form of pickled sauerkraut, kimchi is an extremely spicy and sour fermented cabbage.
