4 Task: The staff at the Field Museum of Natural History is overworked and understaffed! They need our help! This dusty envelope of artifacts from an unknown culture was found tucked away in the basement of the museum. Your task as amateur archaeologists is to unlock the culture of this ancient civilization based only the primary sources you are given. Task

What will you need to discover: You will need to figure out their language (alphabet) Location Time Period Basic cultural traits ~ for example: Government (monarchy, democracy, oligarchy) Religion (monotheistic, polytheistic) Name of God/Gods Military mindset – war or peace like? Economy (money dominant, barter) Your job as amateur archaeologists…

7 Procedure! You will need to complete the following steps:
1. Step 1: Translate their language 2. Step 2: Translate all the artifacts 3. Step 3: Catalog the artifacts 4. Step 4: Determine conclusions based upon the artifacts Procedure!

10 How you will be assessed?
1st - You will be individually graded one your answers for Steps You should have your packet completed for each artifact with a clear description and possible use. (This will be a 10 point classwork grade) 2nd - You will be individually graded for the conclusions in your packet (Step 4)- The grade will be a 15pt reading/writing grade based on the conclusions you present and the evidence you have to back it up.

Picture of a red maple leaf in the corner. What can be learned? 2 minimum (Why) *Government – written to king – monarchy *Religion – one god – monotheistic *Location – Canada? Maple leaf *Peaceful – writing letter instead of fighting

Step 4 Work on Step # 4 Prediction Artifact Evidence Justification Step # 4 will be worth 15 points – reading/writing grade 10 points – classwork (Steps 1, 2 & 3) Packet should be completed with a clear description & use 15 points – reading/writing (Step 4) Conclusions, Evidence (primary source) & Justify There is evidence that suggests the location of this civilization is in Alaska. For example, in a letter written by an explorer to his team back home, “It is very cold here and the snow never melts” (artifact #4) In northern Alaska there are areas where, due to temperature, the snow never melts. Hint – for time period – use document #1 Finish Step # 4 – Due tomorrow at the start of class.
