Directions: Bring out a loose leaf sheet of paper. Write your heading and the following title on your paper: The Giver- Chapter Journal Entries
After each chapter we will write a journal entry. Each entry must be at least 5-6, well thought out, detailed sentences. I will collect all entries at the end of the novel. Grades will be based on completion, how well thought out your responses are, and how neat your papers are.

At the end of the evening meal, each person in the community must share his/her feelings with the members of his/her family unit. What is significant about this ritual?

What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of being given a lifetime job? explain.

Do you think public humiliation is a good method of punishment? Why or why not?

6. Chapter 4-Journal Entry
How would you describe release in Jonas’ community? Do you think it is a good idea? Why or why not? How would this work in our society?

Jonas says that it is better to talk about ways people are the same instead of different. In what ways does Jonas’ community try to avoid differences? Do you think this is beneficial to a society? Why or why not?

In this chapter there is mention of “Elsewhere”. Describe what you think “Elsewhere” is. What does it look like? Where is it located? Is it even a place?

Would you like to be considered an adult and begin training for your lifetime job at the age of 12? Why or why not? Explain.

10. Chapter 8-Journal Entry
Jonas is said to have intelligence. He’s also told that he will soon gain the wisdom he needs for his job. What do you think are the differences between intelligence and wisdom? Give examples.

Do you think lying is necessary to keep a “perfect” society going?

12. Chapter 10-Journal Entry
In chapter 10 the Giver tells Jonas that his “job is to transmit to you all the memories I have within me. Memories of the past.” He makes it clear that they are “...the memories of the whole world.” Why do you think the community has made the decision to keep these memories from everyone? What impact would erasing or keeping “memories of the whole world” from people have on a society? Explain.

The Giver tells Jonas that he has great honor, but it is not the same as power. Which do you think is more important: honor or power? Explain.

Do you think the community’s decision to lose color was a good choice? Why or why not? If they lost color, what do you think they gained?

Jonas says that he and The Giver have to protect people from making the wrong choices. What do you gain or lose by making a wrong choice? Give examples.

Why do you think Jonas loses memories when he shares them with Gabriel? Explain.

Why do you think that “love” has become “obsolete” in this community? How would this emotion (or any other emotion) affect this community? Explain.

Throughout the story, citizens apologize for mistakes; but they never say “I’m sorry.” Do you think there is a difference between saying, “I apologize,” and “I’m sorry”? If so, what is the difference?

Jonas’ community focuses on sameness; yet they don’t believe that there should be two identical people, twins, in the community. What might be the community’s reasons for thinking this way?

Jonas begins to experience some of the things that the community did not have to worry about such as hunger, pain, and poor weather. Do you see any advantages to a community like Jonas’? Are the advantages worth dealing with the disadvantages?

25. Chapter 23-Journal Entry
Explain in your own words how this book ends. Did you like the ending why or why not? Why do you think Lois Lowry chose to end her book this way?
