Race any one of the groups that human beings can be divided into based on shared distinctive physical traits or shared culture or history BUT… has no basis in genetics More variations within groups than among groups Also, consider transracial. Transracial: A person who lives as a member of a “race” other than that assigned at birth

religion an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods Types: Catholicism, Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Hindusim, Shintoism, etc…

ethnicity Particular affiliation to a people classed according to common racial, national, tribal, religious, linguistic, or cultural origin or background German, Chinese, Indian, American, Oromo, Hutu, Miao, Hui, etc.

nationality a legal relationship involving allegiance to particular state or nation share the same history, traditions, and language, and who usually live together in a particular country American, Egyptian, Japanese, Brazilian, etc.

gender the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one’s sex Cisgender: gender and sex identity is aligned with what is assigned at birth Gay: individuals who are primarily attracted to members of the same sex, umbrella term for the LGBTQ community

Gender Identity (Not a complete list)
Agender: no connection to traditional gender Androgynous: expressing elements of both masculinity and femininity Bigender: person who fluctuates between masculine and feminine Third Gender: for a person who does not identify with either man or woman, but identifies with another gender Transgender: A person who lives as a member of a gender other than that assigned at birth based on anatomical sex Gender IDENTITY is not the same as Gender EXPRESSION! Gender Expression is the visible/outward appearance of “gender” - whereas IDENTITY is the internal sense of self. Dress like a girl; identify as masculine. Dress like a man; identify as female.

sex refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women Intersex: combination of sexual gonads, organs, and/or hormones

sexuality feelings of attraction or desire
The object of our desire defines our sexual orientation.

Sexual Orientation Asexual: no interest in sexual relationships
Bisexual: sexually attracted to both masculine and feminine Pansexual: a person who experiences sexual, romantic, physical, and/or spiritual attraction for members of all gender identities/expressions

victim One that is acted on and is adversely affected
subject to oppression, hardship, mistreatment, or violence

perpetrator Person who carries out an adverse act
Commits oppression, hardship, mistreatment, or violence

bystander One who is present but takes no part in a situation

upstander someone who recognizes when something is wrong and acts to make it right Being socially responsible

propaganda information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view

discussion What is the difference between: race and religion?
What is the difference between ethnicity and nationality? What is the difference gender, sex, and sexuality? Why do we need to know the differences? Sex is physical and biological. Gender: social or cultural Sexuality: physical and emotional
