Creating themes from motifs E.g. motif = effects of war; theme = The detrimental effects of war carry on for generations to come. Motifs themes Use your second motif tracker to narrow down to two motifs Locate 4 supports (general) that demonstrate the development of your theme (can be plot points, elements of characterization, Orwell’s use of literary devices, etc.) *No need to locate textual evidence just yet! Create full theme/message for each motif Once you have created your two potential themes, select one and use the quote sheet to locate textual evidence for each of your four supports. **This page for your ONE theme and four quotes (with context and analysis) will serve as Assignment #1 – Research Proposal.

Homework Begin Reviewing for Books 2 and 3 Test next week (Thursday, 5/11) Have a theme selected (Stg. 1) and begin finding quotes. (*Note: You will need 4 quotes total from You will have class time on Tuesday to complete this process, but know that Stage 1 is due at the end of the block on 5/9, and we will also have a test review on that day, so don’t leave yourself too much to do!) I will approve your theme (and your examples) or let you know if it needs to be tweaked or reworded before you move on to Stage 2!
