2 Emerging Trends in Computing Technology
6.1.1

3 Learning Objectives 6.1.1 Be aware of current and emerging trends in computing technology [ quantum computing, DNA computing, artificial intelligence (AI), nanotechnology]

4 Why Do We Need New Technologies?
Transistor based computing Cost of manufacture Generation of heat when running Cost to the environment of manufacture and disposal

5 Topic 6: The Bigger Picture
Each of these sections is about society, law, environment, or advances in technology You’ll need to learn facts about each You’ll need to learn how to discuss each topic in relation to a scenario. The best way to tackle these topics is with a plan One use of artificial intelligence being explored is the automatic marking of essay answers in exams. Discuss the appropriateness of this use of AI.

6 6.1.1 Trends – A Plan Describe the trend Use appropriate keywords
Identify 6 distinct characteristics Identify advantages/benefits (at least 4) Identify disadvantages/drawbacks (at least 4) Evaluate the effect of wider use (decide good/bad by using your evidence) These will be your revision notes.

7 Your Turn 35 min A worksheet has an outline of the plan
These are your revision notes, so do a good job. A worksheet has an outline of the plan Each section has a set of online resources Watch/read the online resource and identify information that can be used to fill in the outline sections You should add enough information to (a-e) to make a page in length The last section (f) is your chance to practice a question of at least 6 marks. Teacher to show the empty worksheet and the completed sample on DNA Computing.

8 Plenary: Vocabulary Measured in billionths of a metre
Sometimes called ‘intelligent systems’ Involves biological organisms Based on the laws of physics Involves chemical reactions Involves study of complex algorithms Has a potentially unlimited supply of clean building material Has a great potential for parallel processing Quantum Computing DNA Computing Artificial Intelligence Nanotechnology C B A D C B A

9 Homework Finish the worksheet you started in class. Upload to the VLE.
Due in 2 lessons time.
