5
What Are Essential Oils?
Life blood of the plant Natural, living molecules “Liquid life” Pure, natural and safe Powerful – millions of molecules in each drop!
6
Your Pet’s Sense of Smell
Most animals have a much keener sense of smell than humans If your pet recoils from an essential oil, it may simply be because the aroma is overwhelming Be gentle when introducing essential oils Go slowly and use only one drop or less Dilute with organic coconut oil (or other carrier oil) Give your pet time to adapt to the aroma Just like humans, each pet is different Honor their individual body, mind, spirit
7
How to Use Essential Oils on Pets
Diffuse Mechanical diffuser Passive diffusing Add to drinking water Mix with foods Use topically on fur Give orally by mouth Always Use Young Living
8
Diffusing Essential Oils
Water-based mechanical diffusers Start with 1-4 drops oil placed into water reservoir Diffuse in an open area Observe the pet for first 5-10 minutes Air-style diffusers Best for larger, more open spaces Places undiluted essential oil molecules into the air Passive diffusing Oil and water in a spray bottle – spray into air Oil on a cotton ball, cage papers, toys, etc.
9
Adding Essential Oils to Water Supply
Avoid “warm” oils (eg oregano, thyme, cinnamon bark) Use only glass, ceramic or stainless steel containers Be considerate of amount of essential oil used Birds bathe in water Animal smells aroma before tasting the oil-infused water Start with small amount of oil (i.e., 1 drop) & gradually increase amount over 7-10 days Use high quality water Suggestion: Use empty NingXia Red bottle to mix and store essential oil water for pets.
10
Considerations for Adding to Water
Animal Considerations Recommendations Birds Poor sense of taste; Bathe in their water 1 drop per liter of water Chickens/Poultry Automated systems may make it harder to assess intake amounts Purification and even warmer oils (eg oregano, thyme) Exotics Small bodies Dip a toothpick in oil to start Cats Less likely to drink oil-infused water Add oil with a toothpick Dogs Easy to adapt Horses & Larger Prefer oils in their water 5 drops in trough; agitate to disperse
11
Mixing Essential Oils with Pet Foods
Birds have very little taste buds and will accept many oils (even the warm ones). Use toothpick method. Dogs will let you know their preferences regarding oils in their foods. Most cats will show lack of interest in eating oils in their food; some like it, however. Horses usually like essential oils in their foods. Add to applesauce, NingXia Red, oats, molasses, feed and even onto hay.
12
Transdermal Absorption
Animals are covered in hair follicles Each follicle acts as a wick to enhance absorption through their skin Cats have more hair follicles per square inch and a finer coat than a dog or horse Chinchillas have the densest amount of hair follicles of any land animal Understand the importance of using less oil and diluting!
13
How Essential Oils May Benefit Pets
The oils can help support healthy immune, digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular and other body systems – just like in humans! Oils can also: Animals enjoy the outdoors annoyance free Soothe sore muscles and joints after normal exercise Calm emotions Ease separation anxiety
14
Topical Applications Involves applying essential oil directly onto pet’s skin or fur Includes “neat” or diluted applications This method works well for dogs, horses, cows, goats and other large animals For cats and smaller animals, it is best to dilute with organic carrier oil. Consider applying essential oil to your hands, rub them together and then pet the animal – all over or in a specific location (eg injured knee)
15
Oral Administration Used when warranted Application may be by:
gel capsule buccal route (inside of cheek) oral drops into mouth rub on gums
