Use the Situation/Task-Action-Result (STAR) approach think of a specific example and your actions and give results (great for strengths). Keep in mind “How can I benefit the employer”

Be positive Avoid talking negatively about former employers Avoid verbal ticks “umm,” “like,” “you know” Come prepared with intelligent questions Match interviewer’s communication style Ex: If interviewer seems all business, then be all business. If interviewer is personable, then ask about their interests

31 DOs Be prepared and confident Be on time
Use the third person when talking about job, don’t assume its yours Write down and practice possible questions Be enthusiastic and positive Check in during interviews Talk about specific achievements Know what you offer (make a list of skills and traits that match job requirements) Be a good listener Ask for interview feedback Ask questions (interview is a two way process, you are getting to know the employer as well) Be honest Turn cell phone off!

32 DON’Ts Talk too much Bring up the salary (timing is crucial, let them bring it up) Be unprepared Arrive too late or too early Have a poor handshake Treat receptionist rudely Talk negatively about current or past employers Ask about benefits, vacation time or salary

What makes you stand out from others? Why did you leave your last job? What experience do you have in this field? Explain how you would be an asset to this organization Why do you want to work for this organization? What is your greatest weakness? Would you be willing to relocate if required?

What are my first priorities on the job? What are you most hoping to find in the person you hire? What have you liked most about working here? How would you describe your company culture? When will you be making a decision on this position?
