Aim: How do scientists use the scientific method to solve a problem?
Do Now:
2
What is the Scientific Method?
A step by step problem solving procedure based on gathered evidence rather than what you believe.
3
State the problem Form a Hypothesis Perform Experiments Collect Data Form a Solution or Conclusion Repeat the experiment Steps of the Scientific Method
4
Steps of the Scientific Method:
S.H.E.D.S Repeat Copy the following:
5
The scientific method always includes the following:
Hypothesis: Prediction or an educated guess. Variable: Factor being tested. Control: used for comparison. Constant: factor that stays the same
6
There are 2 kinds of variables. What are they?
Dependent Variable Independent Variables
7
Independent Variables- these variables are changed by you
Independent Variables- these variables are changed by you. Why is the independent variable changed? To study what happens to the dependent variable.
8
The dependent variable can be measured.
Dependent Variable- this variable responds to changes in the independent variable. The dependent variable can be measured. *These variables depend on something else
9
You are testing the effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable!
10
An observation is the perception of something with our senses.
Observations & Inferences An observation is the perception of something with our senses.
11
An inference uses observations to form an explanation, determine a cause, or draw a conclusion.
12
Observation or inference?
A weatherperson looks at a weather map and predicts a storm is coming. Observation or inference?
