Conclusion Rib fixation should be considered in any patient with multiple rib fractures who’s function is compromised by pain on breathing, especially if there is displacement or demonstrable movement. Fixation will speed recovery of ventilated patients. Sternal fractures can be fixed to prevent deformity or to treat pain. Ribs can be reconstructed with plates following chest wall resection.
