CLASS DEBATE What? Prepare a debate about a topic dealing with addiction. (e.g. Soft drugs should be legalised in Belgium.) Why? To prove you can defend an opinion (even if it’s not your own). To show you can work in groups. To show you can listen to other people. To show you can reason and use logic.
3
CLASS DEBATE How? Work in groups of 5.
Find another group who wants to debate about the same thing. Find as many arguments in favour AND against. You need to know what your competitors are going to do as well. Make a list of the strongest arguments to prove your point. Make a list of the strongest arguments to contradict your point. How can you in turn contradict these? Brainstorm about other possible arguments.
4
CLASS DEBATE What matters? That you can defend a case.
That you show logic and reason. That you can contradict contra-arguments. That you can listen to your competitors. Think twice! It’s not about being the loudest, it’s about being the sharpest. Can you oversee the whole thing or do you get lost in the middle of the debate?
