1 4 Activities of SOD (A) and CAT (B) of P
4 Activities of SOD (A) and CAT (B) of P. involutus grown in liquid MMN medium without Cd (X) or treated with 5 (▲), 50 (○), or 500 (●) μM Cd for 96 h. The activity was expressed relative to the activity in controls (=100%, dashed line). Each value is the mean of four individual replicates (±S.D.). * indicates values that differ significantly from the control at P≤0.05. From: Characterisation of antioxidative systems in the ectomycorrhiza-building basidiomycete Paxillus involutus (Bartsch) Fr. and its reaction to cadmium FEMS Microbiol Ecol. 2002;42(3): doi: /j tb01025.x FEMS Microbiol Ecol | © 2002 Federation of European Microbiological Societies. 2 3 Antioxidative systems in P. involutus
3 Antioxidative systems in P. involutus. Fungal material of controls was collected after 3, 6, 24, 48 and 96 h culture time (n=4 per sampling date) and used to determine antioxidative systems. The bars indicate overall means from all sampling dates (n=24, ±S.D.). CATs, MDAR, DAR, GR, GPx, APX activities in nkat (mg protein)−1 and SODs in U (mg protein)−1. Ascorbate (ASC) and glutathione (reduced and oxidised glutathione) (GSH) were calculated in nmol g−1 fresh weight. Gray bars, left y axis; black bar, right y axis. ND, not detected. 3 2 Cd concentration in mycelia of P
2 Cd concentration in mycelia of P. involutus grown in liquid MMN medium treated with 5 (▲), 50 (○), or 500 (●) μM Cd for 96 h. The detection limit for cadmium determination was 30 ng mg−1 dry weight indicated by the dashed line. * indicates values that differ significantly from the control at P≤0.05. 4 1 Biomass (A) and ergosterol content (B) of P
1 Biomass (A) and ergosterol content (B) of P. involutus grown in liquid MMN medium without Cd (X) or treated with 5 (▲), 50 (○), or 500 (●) μM Cd for 96 h. Each value is the mean of four individual replicates (±S.D.). * indicates values that differ significantly from controls at P≤0.05. 5 5 Activities of GPx (A) and GR (B) and concentration of glutathione (reduced and oxidised glutathione) (C) in P. involutus grown in liquid MMN medium without Cd (X) or treated with 5 (▲), 50 (○), or 500 (●) μM Cd for 96 h. The enzyme activity and the glutathione concentration were expressed relatively to controls (=100%, dashed line). Each value is the mean of four individual replicates (±S.D.). * indicates values that differ significantly from the control at P≤0.05.
