1 Tissue/Organ Engineering
What will be covered. Types of cells Scaffolds Biocompatibility

2 122,572 8,030 How can this be useful? Heart Disease
6,000,000 550,000 Pulmonary Disease (COPD) 12,000,000 Renal Failure 530,000 Heart – 0.6 Lung – 2.5 Kidney – 3.3 122,572 8,030

3 What is tissue engineering?

4 What kinds of cells are used?
Specialized cells How do we obtain them? Stem Cells: Embryonic Vs. Placental/Umbilical Use the patient’s cells

5 What methods are used to create scaffolds?
Things to consider Biocompatibility Vascularization Biodegradability Decellularization ECM Allows for vascularization Allows for optimal biocompatibility A “natural” scaffold

6 Summary This is still a developing technology.
The best method of scaffolding is using the process of decellularization, but there are others. Stem cells can also be used to allow cells to grow and specialize.
