1 Lesson 9.1 Motion

2 Position and Motion The location of an object.
This answers the question, where is the object? When an object changes position on a grid you can draw an arrow between its old position and new. This arrow marks the objects motion. Motion is change in position over time. Motion has two parts. Distance which is how far it has traveled on a grid and Direction which is where the arrow is pointing from its first position. Example Page 430

3 Frame of Reference A group of objects from which you can measure a position or the motion. You can use almost anything as a frame of reference. Page 431 Examples

4 Speed and Velocity Speed is how fast an objects position changes over time. Speed is your distance traveled/The amount of time it took to travel that far. Ex: 60mph Velocity is the measurement that combines both speed and direction of a moving object. Speed with direction.

5 Acceleration Acceleration is the change of velocity of an object over time. If the direction of your velocity changes than your acceleration changes. Page 435

6 Momentum Momentum is the product of mass multiplied by velocity.
The more momentum an object has, the easier that object can move other objects. Example: A bowling ball with more mass will knock over more pins than a lighter bowling ball thrown at the same speed.
