Al-Qaeda “The Base” Founded in 1988 by Osama bin Laden.
Born to the family of billionaire Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden in Saudi Arabia.

Soviet Afghan War December 1979 – February 1989
The Soviet Union, Communists, came to the aid of the Afghan Communist Government that was fighting Muslim insurgents (rebels). The Mujahedeen, a term used for someone who is fighting a Jihad, Holy war. They called themselves “Freedom Fighters” for they were fighting the Soviet Invasion.
17
U.S. Help During the Afghan War, the U.S. was fighting a “Cold War” against the Soviet Union. Cold War means they actually never fought; however, the U.S. sent many weapons, trainers, and money to the Mujahedeen. Finally, the Soviets left Afghanistan, leaving the Mujahedeen to take control, giving power to the growing Al-Qaeda.
18
Fatwa After their victory in Afghanistan, bin Laden returned to Saudi Arabia. In 1996, after Al - Qaeda was strengthened and started to spread in the Middle East and Africa, bin Laden issued a Fatwa (religious edict, law). bin Laden stated that all foreigners in Islamic Countries must be kicked out, especially American interests and their allies.
19
[T]he ruling to kill the Americans and their allies – civilians and military – is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it, in order to liberate the al-Aqsa Mosque [in Jerusalem] and the holy mosque [in Mecca] from their grip, and in order for their armies to move out of all the lands of Islam, defeated and unable to threaten any Muslim. This is in accordance with the words of Almighty Allah, 'and fight the pagans all together as they fight you all together,' and 'fight them until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah'.

???What would you have done???
1st paragraph; This History. Things to answer. What is the Mujahedeen and why are they fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan? What is a Cold War and why was the U.S. helping the Mujahedeen? 2nd paragraph; The back stab. Things to answer. What did the Mujahedeen do after the Soviets left Afghanistan. What is a Fatwa. What do you think Al-Qaeda did with all those weapons we gave them. 3rd paragraph; What should we do in the future by looking at the past. Things to answer. Would you give weapons to help another country or group out anymore after the disaster of giving weapons to Al-Qaeda – make an argument for this one – be careful, we do give weapons to people that need it, like Israel and South Korea. Predict what we will talk about tomorrow – what will Al – Qaeda do with these weapons.

Al- Qaeda Now After a series of deadly bombings in the early 2000’s, Al –Qaeda was succeeded by the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2014. Currently, many Al-Qaeda members are located on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Though these two countries make attempts to destroy them, the terrain is very rough and hard to kill the terrorists.
28
Somalia In 2012 Al-Qaeda joined forces with the Somalian Terrorist group Al-Shabaab “The Youth” to try and take over Somalia. They also work together to send more troops back into Afghanistan to rebuild Al-Qaeda there.
