Viva! Latin american film industries and the marketing of ‘latin-americanness’
The module aims to provide students with an informed understanding of the variety of films that are made in Latin America in the 21st century, how they are made, the challenges that face filmmakers on the continent, and the relationship of Latin American films to international film culture. Over the course of two semesters students will gain an understanding of the film industry: issues relating to the production, exhibition and distribution of films within and outside Latin America. They will have the opportunity to analyse films, discuss production contexts, and examine stereotypes and clichés relating to the reception of Latin American films abroad
3
On completion of this module students should have attained the following: a familiarity with the socio-political context in which films are produced in Latin America; a recognition of the importance of funding sources, and of the impact on filmmaking of national and transnational financial imperatives; an appreciation of the importance of film festivals in contemporary film reception and distribution; an introduction to reception theory/issues relating to spectatorship of contemporary films.
