Types of Essays

Narrative Essay In a narrative essay, the writer tells a story about a real-life experience. While telling a story may sound easy to do, the narrative essay challenges students to think and write about themselves. The story should be as vivid as possible. First person, “I”, is used in these essays. The author should draw a conclusion or make a personal statement in the end.

Expository Essay The expository essay is an informative piece of writing that presents a balanced analysis of a topic. The writing will explain or define a topic, using facts, statistics, and examples. Sometimes comparing and contrasting techniques will be used. The writing is based on facts and not personal feelings. First person, “I”, is not used.

Argumentative Essay An argumentative essay proves an opinion about an issue. This essay is based on pros and cons of an issue. It will contain facts, statistics, and examples. It contains a counter-argument to address the opposing side. It contains a refutation to “out-do” or “refute” the opposing side of the issue.

Analysis Essay This essay analyzes, examines, or interprets things as an event, novel, poem, play, or other works of art. Different elements in a story can be examined such as settings, characters, conflicts, and themes.

Structure of an Essay All essays should include an introduction paragraph, body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph. There must be a clear thesis statement or claim. There may be a variety of number of body paragraphs depending on the type of essay written. Body paragraphs may include two SEE Sets or three SEE Sets. Essays will require different elements based on their specific function.
