Situation: Global IT Talent Gap Challenge
Evolution of the Network Time Voice Transport Telecommuting / VPN Wireless Web 2.0 Apps Unified Communications IP Video, TelePresence Enhanced Security Switching Routing Storage Role of the Network Grows Knowledge Gap Converged Solutions 50% of Security is secure routers. 35% of Voice is router-embedded. Wireless is 15% and growing annually. This chart shows the challenges facing our customers and partners that drive the need for certification of professional knowledge and experience and has driven the need for the new associate level tracks we are announcing. The network and Cisco solutions continue to grow in technical complexity as they becomes the platform of convergence for multiple advanced technologies such as security, unified communications, mobility and datacenter, and demand for the workers who can plan, build and run these networks has outpaced IT talent supply worldwide.. Estimated global skills gap of 3.1 million by 2012 Knowledge of networking fundamentals is no longer sufficient. Now, network professionals must understand networking systems with integrated security, wireless, and voice capabilities. New careers in IT are being established that are based more on complex services and architectures than network systems. Cisco needs to be leading the charge here to provide direction and proper learning paths and resources to help our customers and partners address the gap in skilled professionals. 3.12 M Gap by 2012 Cisco Confidential

Another part of the study focused on the importance of four-year degree and professional certifications with four year degrees only slightly more important for qualifying for jobs (51% of IT decision makers look for 4 year degrees, 49% look for certifications to ensure solid foundation ) and certifications first for performance on the job. White paper will be available on this research at the launch on Cisco Learning Network, our new Learning community to also be announced on the same day as CCNA Concentrations Cisco will leverage the results of the study to ensure our certification program remains relevant to the changing needs of employers looking for qualified staff for specific job functions, AND professionals wanting to upgrade their skills, and newcomers looking for a successful start to their careers in IT. Cisco believes that job role-based certification provides employers the skilled workers they need to meet these demands and that corporations need professionals who have more than product and technology skills—they must be able to fulfill job role requirements.
