HAITI : HISTORICAL SITES (NORTH)
Haiti has a rich history. It packs a lot of historical sites for such a small-sized country. Some places are not easy to reach (awful tracks or no tracks ….) From the colonial times, remains of sugar & coffee plantations can be seen in many places, especially near Cap-Haïtien. The most scenic ruins are those of Habitation Dion in Chaîne des Matheux. Also from the colonial times, there are lots of forts, most of them along the coasts. The most interesting ones are those along the Northern coast, such as Fort Picolet near Cap Haïtien and Fort Dauphin in Fort-Liberté, and in the South near Saint Louis du Sud. Later, forts were built everywhere in the mountains by the former slaves in order to prevent the French to invade again the country. The most impressive ones are Citadelle La Ferrière in the North (a Unesco WHS), Fort Drouet in Chaîne des Matheux and Citadelle des Platons in the South on the edge of Massif de la Hotte.
