Feedback This presentation will give attention to two types of feedback: correcting and commending.

Providing Student Feedback
STEP 1: CONSIDER THE CAUSE Errors can result from a number of factors.
7
1: Determine the Cause INSTRUCTOR / TECHNOLOGICAL FACTOR(S)
STUDENT PERFORMANCE (UNDERSTANDING / EFFORT) • Is the error directly related to possible miscommunication on the part of the instructor? (Could instructions have been misinterpreted? Were directions unclear?) • Was there a problem with the technology that may have contributed to the student not fulfilling an assignment as explained? • Is the error a result of the student not understanding a concept or another factor such as a lack of motivation or effort? • Was the student’s work completely incorrect or was part of the work completed accurately?

STEP 2: Is the feedback you are providing meant to correct or commend?
9
2: Determine Type of Feedback
Corrective Commending • Corrective feedback is feedback that points out and provides correction to an error in student work. • Commending feedback is feedback that recognizes and commends work correctly completed by a student.
