1 Presentation on Weather Balloon

2 A Weather Balloon measures weather conditions higher in the atmosphere.
Measures temperature, air pressure, wind speed and direction

3 Weather Balloons Sometimes weather balloons land in the oddest places!

4 A weather or sounding balloon is a balloon (specifically a type of high altitude balloon) which carries instruments aloft to send back information on atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity and wind speed by means of a small, expendable measuring device called a radiosonde.

5 How high can weather balloons go?
Roughly 100,000 ft or 20 miles. A few of the balloons ascend to 5 hPa, reaching around 115,000 ft---not quite as high as Felix Baumgartner. Pressure tells you about the amount of atmosphere above you, so if you go from roughly 1000 hPa to 10 hPa, you are rising above 99% of the atmosphere.

6 Which element is used in weather balloons and why?
The balloon is usually filled with hydrogen due to lower cost, though helium can also be used. The ascent rate can be controlled by the amount of gas with which the balloon is filled.
