1 Good morning Please sit down and get out your English book Planner Pen
Spoken language study pack PREPARE TO TAKE SOME NOTES IN YOUR ENGLISH BOOK and to write down the homework in your planner.

2 Controlled assessment (classroom exam)
Your controlled assessment on spoken language study (texts and instant messaging) will now take place on all four English lessons next week: Monday Tuesday Wednesday Friday

3 The task The task is the one that we have been working towards. Here it is: What methods do people use to shorten their message when texting and/or messaging? How do these methods relate to the way we speak?

4 You MUST: Collect and present some data (examples) Comment on the data Point out methods of abbreviation and how they are used Consider whether different types or ages of people are more or less likely to use abbreviations Consider why this might be the case Compare texting and/or messaging with the way people speak Comment on people’s attitudes towards texting and/or messaging

5 Data is information about how people use and feel about abbreviations in text and instant messages
Data in your case is likely to be one or all of the following: Your general knowledge of how people shorten their messages Some brief printed examples of methods of shortening messages (no more than two sides of A4) Answers people have given to questions you have asked about how they shorten messages, or how they feel about abbreviations.

6 Data You can use your own data.
If you don't use your own data you MUST use these: The four examples of instant messages (chat) that you worked on with Mrs Lucas The two examples of text messages on p5 of the study pack (you will get copies of these in the exam)

7 Time and length of controlled assessment
You have four lessons to do the assessment (the four lessons next week) You should write 800 – 1000 words CHECK YOUR HANDWRITING TO FIND OUT HOW MANY SIDES OF A4 THAT IS FOR YOU. You must leave your work at the end of each of the four sessions: you cannot work on it between the sessions.

8 What is this assessment worth?
The assessment counts for 10% of your GCSE English Language. That means that one in ten of all your marks will come from what you write next week.

9 Plan your controlled assessment. Write your notes on the
Homework Here is your homework: Plan your controlled assessment. Write your notes on the notes sheet at the back of your spoken language study pack. Write the homework word-for-word in your planner now.

10 Notes - You can only use the official notes sheet for your notes.
- You can only write on one side. - You must fill in the other details on the sheet. - You must not have a word list - But you CAN put the technical words you are going to use in your notes. - Notes must be notes, not sentences and paragraphs for copying. - I will check your notes during the exam

11 Structure and content To decide what you need to put into the controlled assessment, look very carefully at - the controlled assessment title on the front of your study pack - the explanation bullet points on the front of your study pack - the grade criteria on the top half of page 12 of your study pack YOU MUST AIM FOR AT LEAST BAND 4

12 One student's first paragraph
In this spoken language study I am going to look at different ways people use to shorten their messages when they are texting and instant messaging, and why they do this. I am going to explore examples of lots of different sorts of abbreviations, - emoticons, using numbers for syllables, and so on. Later in my study I will try to explain why texting and messaging are more like talk than writing. Finally I am going to write about how different people feel about 'text- speak' and what attitudes they have towards people who use abbreviations.

13 What you can have in the exam
Your notes sheet Your data A pen Sorry – teddy bears, piles of make-up, chocolate santa clauses and firearms have now been banned.
