DEMOGRAPHIC TRENDS POPULATION
2
What are the numbers? When the population of the world over the past three millenniums is graphed, it is apparent the majority of its growth has occurred in a brief 200 year span.
3
What are the numbers? It is difficult to analyze the previous graph because the rate of growth is very rapid. If the same data is plotted on logarithmic graph paper, the changes and patterns of growth become more evident.
4
It is interesting to see how fast the population of the world is rising. In the 10 seconds or so that it takes you to read this text box, according to Worldometer, the global population will have increased by about 25 people.
5
Population Studying how a population is growing and changing, who makes up a population, where they come from, where they are going and where they live is important for providing for the current needs of a population and for making decisions for the future The study of population is called DEMOGRAPHY
6
Population Statistics
There are many different statistics that can be helpful to demographers These statistics are collected with the CENSUS, demographic surveys, or through government records
7
Population Statistics
Birth Rate / Death Rate the relationship between the number of births/deaths and the size of the population Number of Births per Year x 1000 = Births per 1000 people (Birth Rate) Population Standardizing these rates makes it easier to compare countries or time periods
8
Population Statistics
Natural Increase Rate The amount a population has grown when all births and deaths are taken into account Birth rate – Death Rate = #/1000 (NIR / 1000 x 100 = %)
9
Population Statistics
Immigration / Emigration Rate The total number of people who have entered or left the country Calculate the same as birth rate Net Migration Rate Immigration Rate – Emigration Rate
10
Population Statistics
Population Growth Rate The total growth of a population when births, deaths, immigration and emigration have been accounted for Natural Increase Rate + Net Migration Rate Population Growth affects issues regarding housing, education, healthcare, jobs, availability of labour and customers.

Population Statistics
Doubling Time The time it would take a population to double at the current population growth rate Rule of 70: 70/Population Growth Rate = Doubling Time
13
Population Statistics
Population Pyramids Graphs that show the age and size of a population and compare male and female trends

Quiz! How long will it take for the United States to double its population? 70/0.97 = 72 years and 58 days By what year should Afghanistan double its population? 70/3.85 = = 2024 Based on the 2006 growth rates, what should the population of China be in 2066? Doubling time for China is 120 years. So in 60 years the population of China in 2066 should be around 1,984,455,000. If a country doubles its population in 15 years and 6 months, what is its growth rate? Which country from the list fits this profile? The growth rate would be 4.5% and the country is Liberia. 70/? = 15.5 or 70/15.5 = x x = 4.5
