1
To understand the rules of summarising.
2
What is the point of a summary?
Does it change depending on what type of text your summarising? What is important to know when summarising a narrative?
3
How do you know what to include?
4
Try these rules Delete Substitute Keep
What does this mean? Write a definition next to each Try these rules
5
1. If I left this out would it still make sense?
2. Does this adhere to the author’s message? Also ask yourself this
6
Other things to remember
If it takes up most of the chapter – you need to have a dot-point for it For chapters this size you are generally looking at 5/6 dot-points Use dot-points The feelings of characters are also important in a narrative summary. Other things to remember
7
Fix it up. Apply the rules.
Summary part 1

The police arrived to look for the bag.
Five men, the older, fatter man looked like the senior officer. Raphael and Gardo eat chicken brought from the money they found. The police were giving away one thousand pesos for people to look for the wallet and ten thousand pesos to the person who found it. Raphael nearly gave the bag in but decided against it. The police were coming back in the morning and paying people to work. The police officer comes and talks to Raphael. The two boys try to be cute, harmless little trash boys. His auntie has had problems with the police before. Raphael describes his house - 3 stories made from truck pallets with plastic and canvas. Raphael and Gardo decide to move the bag and money out of the house. They are going to give it to Rat to hide, in return for money.

Fix up – add to word square. What do you know about summarising now?

Using those rules, what’s wrong with this summary?
Narrated by Raphael Raphael tells us that Rats real name is Jun-Jun, that he lives with rats and has no family like a lot of other children on the dumpsite. Raphael and Gardo sneak out of the house to hide the wallet. Raphael describes what the dumpsite is like at night, the rats come out and the trash seems to be alive at night. Raphael and Gardo visit Rats home . Gardo kills rats if they are in his way otherwise he stays away from them, after his hand went bad after a rat bit him. Rat hides the wallet for 50 pesos after asking Raphael why he is hiding the wallet instead of handing it in for the pesos reward. Rat wants to help uncover who Jose Angelico is and why the police are after him. Rat recognises the key as belonging to the lockers at Central station as he had worked there for a year before he started working at the dumpsite. He tells Gardo and Raphael this after they give him another 100 pesos. They decide to go to Central station as soon as they can to open the locker. Using those rules, what’s wrong with this summary?
12
Part 1: Chapter 4 We are introduced to Rat, he lives alone in Behala, he is worse off than others because of this. His living conditions are very poor He lives under the rubbish with the rats, it is quite dangerous as the garbage may fall on top of him. Raphael asked him to hide the wallet, map and key Rat suggests they should hand it all in and get the reward but they decide to hold out while people are getting paid by the police Rat gives them a clue, the key is for a locker at central station.

Have a go at summarising Chapter 5
Advanced Shows a deep understanding of key ideas about events and characters in the text and how these apply to author’s message. Logical ordering of ideas. Is able to identify key vocabulary. Proficient Shows understanding of key ideas about events, setting and characters in the text. Most of the key vocabulary has been identified. Uses dot points and/or Who, wanted to, but so summary structure effectively. There may be too much or too little detail. Basic Shows some knowledge of most key ideas about events, setting and characters in the text. Events are mostly be in order. Some use of key vocab Some sections in copied straight from novel. Attempted to use dot points and/or Who, wanted to, but so summary structure. Low Limited understanding of key events, setting and characters. Is not able to identify most key vocab. Little use of dot points and/or Who, wanted to, but so summary structure. Have a go at summarising Chapter 5
14
How did you go? Summary should look something like this.
Chapter 5 Gardo narrates this chapter. He explains that Raphael and himself are more like brothers. Gardo is much more serious and responsible while Raphael is a bit more of a dreamer and thinks everything is a bit of a game. The whole community, including children, are involved in the bag search and are very happy to look for the bag as they are being paid by the police. Gardo and Raphael are trying to find out more about what’s going on without being found out. They realise it must be very important as the police are really interested. Raphael’s aunty is worried that they’re not safe from the police if they think the boys know more than they are admitting. Gardo realises she is right. How did you go? Summary should look something like this.

Strategy for summarsing narrative
Character focused so it doesn’t summarise the whole story. Who (the character you are talking about) Wanted to (what was the problem?) But (what was the complication?) So (How was this resolved?)
35
Who, wanted to, but, so summary
Raphael is a trash boy living on the dump. He finds a bag and wants to use the key and go to central station to open the locker and find out more about Jose Angelico. But Gardo doesn’t want to because he is worried about the police and that they are in danger. He tries to stop Raphael from going. So he tells Gardo that he and Rat will go anyway and convinces him to come. They find a letter in the locker.
36
Gardo is Raphael’s best friend who acts like a big brother even though he is only 7 hours older than him. He wants money and a way to get off the trash. But the police aren’t trustworthy and he needs to find another way to get off the dump. So they keep the bag to themselves and try to figure it out on their own.
37
Part 2 chapter 2 Part 2: Chapter 2
Raphael is arrested and taken away despite the fight the community put up, to try and stop it. Because of the corruption in the Police force they are afraid for Raphael’s life. The police question, threaten, and torture Raphael about the bag. Despite him being terrified he does not admit he has found the bag. They decide he is no more useful than trash and let him go. He reminds himself that Jose Angelico got the same treatment which is why he knows it’s important not to give the police any information he wants to solve the mystery for Jose. Part 2 chapter 2
