6. Where Should We Start? – ELA
• “Balancing the reading of informational and literary texts so that students can access non-fiction and authentic texts as well as literature • Focusing on close and careful reading of text so that students are learning from the text” PA CCS ELA, draft, 2012
Shift from emphasis on literature to a different balance between fiction and nonfiction (handout?)
Much greater text complexity…..students must learn to grapple with text to extract meaning.
ALL content areas! Students will learn about science and social studies by reading complex texts and primary sources…..just as they will be expected to do in college and career…..
How do we get there? Build a staircase of complexity…students experience a step of growth at each grade level.
Teachers need to learn how to support students as they navigate complex texts instead of going around them or looking for the teacher to provide the “right” interpretation.
