11 Winning the Pacific the U.S. looked for a peaceful way to stop Japanese aggression against China. In an effort to derail the Japanese war machine, the FDR decided to embargo sales of needed military goods, such as oil and scrap metal. The embargo convinced some Japanese leaders to best handle any threat by the U.S. military with a stunning attack against military installations, such as the naval base at Pearl Harbor.

12 z. Before the Invasion…No Trust
Early 1942, while Stalin is getting bashed by Barbarossa, Churchill at White House (2 stories) and planned WWII Two Conferences take place before D-Day (June 6, 1944) Casablanca January 1943… Unconditional Surrender Plan “D-Day” Tehran December 1943… FDR and Churchill promise Stalin the “second front” Stalin indicates lands liberated = lands taken The 3 are now Allies but there is little trust

13 Here's why Why did Stalin not trust FDR and WC?
Not as much Lend Lease to him Felt FDR and WC wanted to destroy him and Communism too…was he right? Why did FDR and WC not trust Stalin? They thought Stalin would want to dominate Europe after the war! (?)

14 Stalin Wanted a 2nd Front
Asked for it for over a year and kept getting little from FDR Stalin was mad that he took the beating from Germany

15 FDR Was Smart FDR cared about avoiding too many deaths that would shake the USA’s resolve USA lost 400K USSR lost 11 million This will be part of the straining of USA and USSR’s relationship for the Cold War
