Physics in Context Chapter 1.1 Notes - Metrics
2
History of Measurements
3
The Metrics system provides units for measuring quantities such as length, mass, and volume.
The metric system is based on powers of 10.
4
SI Base Units include Length Meters m Volume Liters L Mass Kilogram kg
Time Seconds s Electric Current Amperes A Temperature Kelvin K
5
Derived Units All other units are derived from the base units.
Speed is length / time = meters/seconds Force is the Newtons. Force = mass x acceleration = kilograms x meters / seconds2 1Newton = kilograms x meters/ seconds2
6
The United States uses the English system.
Force in the English system is measured in pounds.
