Bundle 3: Matter Types of Reactions
2
What is the density of the mineral sample?
WARM UP 10/10/17 Solve the following problem in your IAN Notebook; A balance and a graduated cylinder are used to determine the density of a mineral sample. The sample has a mass of 14.7 [g] and a volume of 2.2 [mL]. What is the density of the mineral sample?
3
Synthesis Reaction Two separate elements or molecules chemically join to form one new compound Ex. 2H2 + O2 2H2O N2 + 3H2 2NH3 (ammonia)
4
Decomposition Reaction
One molecule is broken into different elements or compound + element. Ex. 2H2O2 2H2O + O2 Hydrogen peroxide CaCO3 CaO + CO2 Limestone
5
Combustion Reaction A substance reacts with oxygen (O2) to produce heat and light. Ex. C + O2 CO2 C6H12O6 + O2 CO2 + H2O What substance must be present for a combustion reaction to occur? OXYGEN GAS
6
WARM UP 10/13/17 Solve the following problem in your IAN Notebook; A student must identify an unknown mineral with a mass of 210 grams. The student lowers the sample into a graduated cylinder and calculates the density. The measurements from the graduated cylinder are shown on the right. What is the density of the mineral?

Reactions Gallery Walk
When the teacher tells you to start, go to each lab table and identify the type of reaction presented. WRITE the reaction type in your notebook and EXPLAIN why you think it is this type of reaction. First team to get all three right without cheating or giving the answer to other teams gets 5 points added to their test grade. Every team that gets them all right without cheating or giving the answer to others gets 2 points added to their test grade.
8
Exothermic Reaction An Exothermic Reaction releases heat during the reactions and does NOT require any heat to start the reaction. Heat exits the reaction No heat needed to start reaction
9
Endothermic Reaction An Endothermic Reaction requires heat to get started and absorbs or draws in heat during the reaction. Heat to get started Heat goes INTO the reaction
10
Endo vs. Exo Endothermic – Energy of the products is greater than the reactants Exothermic – Energy of the products is less than the reactants
11
Fusion Reaction
12
Fission Reaction A nuclear reaction that occurs when a heavy atom splits into smaller atoms releasing an enormous amount of energy.
