Key Idea: Inequality in Housing
In this unit we will explore: How and where different types of housing provided? What affects a person’s access to housing? How this in turn leads to patterns of inequality.

Starter In pairs list all the different housing types you can think of, e.g. apartment...etc What factors influence the type of house a person would like to live in?

The housing market in the UK
In the UK people have 3 main options when finding a home: Own their own home Renting from a social landlord (the Council or Housing Association) Renting from a private landlord Task: Explain the advantages and disadvantages of each. Which group of people are most common in each category? Give reasons. Who is most likely to rent privately? Why?

If you fail to keep up with payments of rent or mortgage your home will be repossessed and you will be evicted. What does this mean?

Factors that influence access to social housing
To qualify for a council house you are rated according to ‘need’. Each council scores a persons circumstances against a criteria or list. Look at your list carefully. Social Housing Criteria Task Do you agree people should be rated? Is the system fair?
