Definition: the state or fact of continuing to live or exist. What are some problems the people in Louisiana have? Why do they have these problems? Could this have been prevented?

6 What do we want to know? What makes us civilized?
Is this a good thing or a bad thing? How can geography impact a civilization?

7 Civilizations project

8 STEP 1: Using your assigned map and geographic location, your group will have approximately 60 minutes to create a civilization of 1,000 people. You must write out your thoughts as you form your project. The more detail you put into your civilization the easier the next step will be!

9 BELLRINGER: 9/13 and 9/14 1. If you have any last minute questions you want to ask before the quiz, make sure you have them ready. I will only answer 5 total from the class, so choose wisely. If you think a neighbor can answer it, ask them first. 2. Have something to write with out on your desk. 3. Write down your HW: None

10 After your quiz… **** YOU WILL HAVE 20 MINUTES FOR YOUR QUIZ. ****
1. Turn in your quiz to your class drawer. Make sure your name is on your quiz. 2. Grab an ANCIENT WORLD HISTORY textbook (green and blue ones) from the stacks at the front. Bring your textbook to me so I can write down the book #. 2. Update your ToC: Page 10: Quiz – Paleolithic vs. Neolithic Eras

11 Civilizations project

12 STEP 2: Draw your civilization on an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of white paper. Put your names on the back of the paper. Your civilization drawing must be clear, labeled, neat, and it must included some color using colored pencils. When you are done with your civilization drawing, STAPLE IT TO THE BACK OF YOUR PACKET.

13 STEP 3: Your civilization is encountering a natural disaster. You must plan for how you will tackle this problem. Fill out the “Natural Disaster Plan” worksheet provided to your group. When your group is done with this, STAPLE the Natural Disaster Plan worksheet to the back of your packet

14 BELLRINGER: 9/15 and 9/16 1. Pick up the papers by the door. Update your ToC as follows: Page 11: SOL Reading – River Valleys Page 12: Notes: 5 Characteristics of Civilization Page 13: Map Activity: Mapping the River Valley Civs. 2. Write down your HW: Read/take notes on pages in your DUIKER textbook.

15 Agenda: 9/15 and 9/16 1. Bellringer
2. Project: Civilization Creation (Day 3 – last day) 3. Introduction: River Valley Civilizations (time permitting) Map activity/quick notes

16 STEP 4: As a group, using the civilization you created, you must now create THREE artifacts. You will draw the artifacts on the sheets provided in your packet. Remember that an artifact may be a small part of a larger item. Your artifacts must be essential to your civilization. They should provide clues about daily life in your civilization. You may draw or physically create these artifacts. If you draw the artifacts, please include a description of the size and materials. DO NOT describe what they are used for or directly identify them.

17 STEP 5: In your group’s packet, put an “X” across the back of the 2nd-to-last page and the last page. You will not be writing on those. As a group, you will view one (1) other groups’ artifacts. Use the sheet I give your group to make comments on the artifacts. At the end of your time viewing the other group’s artifacts, write what you think each one is on the Post-It note provided.

18 Group rotations: Group A  Group B Group B  Group C Group C  Group D
Group D  Group E Group E  Group A On the Post-it Note: Name of the object Where you think the civilization is Any questions you have about the artifact.

19 Quick notes: 5 major characteristics of civilizations

20 1. Advanced cities The word “city” comes from the Latin word for civilization Cities were organized Different areas for living, farming, religion Centers of trade

21 2. Specialized workers Abundant agricultural yields (aka an excess of food)  opportunities for economic specialization Why? Lots of food already from farming, so we can spend time/resources in other occupations (not just farming) Demand by ruling elites for luxury items encouraged artisans and craftspeople to create new products Trade between neighboring populations encouraged creativity = need specialization to produce products to trade

22 Examples of Specialized Workers
Scribes Priests Metalworkers Merchants Weavers Soldiers Teachers

23 3. Complex Institutions Government Job: Meets the administrative needs of the civilization Military Job: Protect civilization and gain land and power Religion Priests = political and religious power Gods are believed to be CRUCIAL to community’s success

24 4. Record Keeping Development of writing 2 purposes: 1. To keep records 2. Literary expression (stories, poems, etc.) Earliest form: Cuneiform (pictograms) symbols of the objects or things they represent Will see these in river valley civs

25 Cuneiform

26 5. Advanced Technology (Tools)
Farming Wheel, plow Fishing Sailboat Weaponry Made of Bronze!! Made of a combination of copper and tin
