Network Attached Device (NAD) are instruments that are interfaced to computer using LAN. The incredible diffusion of ethernet devices at consumer level slow down the price of all ethernet component. UTP cable, hub, switches, ethernet card are now very cheap. And often ethernet card is embedded in every mother. So was natural, for intelligent instrumentation, to change the “old good” serial line with the ethernet connection. The list presents the variety of possibility to acquire something with a control system. The first was the VME-card that in not completely abandoned because in some case the speed need acquisition via VME board. The possibility to put some intelligent in the sensor and speed requirement not very hard allow the diffusion of serial instrumentations. A lot of cabling problem was solved. We are independent of the bus. But over the serial line each instrument has it own protocol. This means that I have to rewrite an differenten acquisition program for each new instrumentat. The good idea of field buses is to standardize the serial connection. 1) The electrical level: If we observe the cable level for the majority field buses is the RS-485. 2) Standardization of connectors … 3) Standardization of protocol But… there is no a really standard and in this way the price doesn’t go down and now is cheaper to apply ethernet connection to instrumentation than fieldbus. 9 EVC as a first prototype?
We need a tool to implement a GAN, a Virtual Organisation of people doing research in the field of Accelerators EVC seams suitable to the requirements pointed out by SC-1, SC-2, SC-3 and SC-4. SC-1, SC-2 via VRVS SC-3, SC-4 via webapp integration and VNC (shared and not) EVC/MVL Nodes (one for facility) can be connected together (single sign-on,...) in one federation (GAN) EVC/MVL station are MVLGAN instance (fixed control room, semi-mobile, mobile, ...) 10 Pilot Application: Far Remote Operations of ELETTRA
Far remote operation of an accelerator facility (i.e. the ELETTRA Synchrotron Radiation Facility) involves: maintenance of the accelerator and its troubleshooting, the repair of delicate equipment performing collaborative machine physics measurements with other laboratories performing commissioning and set ups at remote locations All these activities are based on large amounts of information, which are at present accessible only at the accelerator site. 11 Remote Operations @ ELETTRA
On may 9th 2005 ELETTRA and DESY have jointly carried out the first test of the GANMVL prototype. The two institutes have been linked by means of integrated collaborative environment based on advanced web technologies, video-conferencing and desktop-sharing tools. The test was prepared by sending the MVL Client Manual Sincrotrone Trieste / ELETTRA

13 Remote Measurement Session from ESRF
Date: Thu, 12 May :15: From: Thomas PERRON To: Subject: ESRF finished Hello, I just wanted to thank you both for your help, the experiment was very succesfull, the machine went beautifuly, and the three different connections we had where perfect. Not a single problem, it is something rare..... Just the results are kind of strange, there is not real logic, but this is a different problem.... Have a good day.. Thomas Here is the outline of this talk. I’ll begin with a description of project goals, I’ll spend some words on development approach which s quite new and on system architecture We’ll see some screenshots of EVC application and of some collaboration tools At the end I’ll present status and possible developments Sincrotrone Trieste / ELETTRA

16 MVL Node Installation @ DESY
During the days of May 2005 the development team of the MVL visited DESY with the goal of installing a prototype MVL Node and setting up a first nucleus of the Eurotev MVL Virtual Organisation (VO), connecting all the laboratories and institutions partners in the Eurotev project. The installation was prepared by sending MVL Node Admin Manual All the activities related to the installation of the MVL prototype have been completed in one day. The morning was dedicated to a meeting define a detailed plan of the activities considering the availability of resources (people and computers) and time. Sincrotrone Trieste / ELETTRA

17 MVL Node Installation @ DESY
The afternoon was dedicated to the installation of the MVL Node. The machine provided was equipped with a version of Linux suitable to run the prototype. The installation of the AS was competed with success. The same for the LN. The installation procedure required the generation of the X.509 certificates and the basic scripts were updated for compatibility. The installation was completed with the configuration of the stations and the integration with the MVL Virtual Organisation. Sincrotrone Trieste / ELETTRA

18 MVL Node Installation @ DESY
At the end in the prototype installation we have configured a Test Desy Control Room station plus one management station. The station have been equipped with the standard tools (Chat, FileManager, VRVS) plus some specific tools like RemoteStationAccess based on VNC. The eLog developed by DESY staff was also integrated as a tool of the MVL station. Sincrotrone Trieste / ELETTRA

20 Wish List During the Remote Operation Tests
Single Sign-on (…VNC…) VRVS (…API for booking…) VNC (size mismatch) Better awareness (…cursors on VNC shared…) During the Node Installation Better Administration Enhanced Security (password check, limited time system accounts, X.509 certificates – MyPROXY) ??? Sincrotrone Trieste / ELETTRA
