1
Aim: How can we describe a molecule?
Do Now: Describe as many physical properties as you can about the picture below.
2
How small is the smallest part of a substance?
Substances can be broken down into molecules. What is a molecule? A molecule is the smallest particle of a substance that has the same properties of that substance.
3
Can a molecule be broken down?
A molecule can be broken into smaller parts called atoms. But then it no longer has the properties of that molecule.
4
What are some of the properties we can use to describe molecules?
Molecules can be described using both physical and chemical properties. Some physical properties we can use to describe matter include: Its state of matter (solid, liquid, gas, or plasma). Its density (how much mass can fit in a certain volume)
5
Describe the molecules in each picture.
States of matter Describe the molecules in each picture.
6
What about plasma? Plasma is the fourth state of matter.
Plasma is a very hot gas made of molecules that have lost electrons and so have an electric charge. Plasma molecules are extremely unstable. Plasma is rare on Earth, but makes up 90% of the matter in the universe.
7
Activity Copy and answer questions 1-10 on page 40 in your classroom textbook.

Homework # Answer the questions on the worksheet you were given. A copy of this worksheet will be posted online if you need it.
