5 The Great Migration Would greatly alter the racial makeup of cities such as Chicago, Detroit, New York, and Cleveland. Would also eventually alter American politics. For example, Jim Crow laws in the South prohibited African Americans from voting, but they were able to vote in northern cities and affect the policies of northern politicians.

6 Thanks to World War I, there was a labor shortage in many northern factories.
People like Henry Ford were desperate for workers. Ford sent company agents in to the South to recruit African Americans with the promise of high wages and plentiful work.

7 Assessment Prompt 1: Great Migration

8 The Dust Bowl Began in the late 1920s, when the dropping price of crops caused many farmers to leave their field uncultivated. This was followed by a terrible drought in the Great Plains. Without grass or wheat to hold in what little rainfall they received, the Great Plains soil turned to dust and the area became known as “the Dust Bowl.”

9 Winds would stir up the dust and blacken the sky for miles.
Animals and people would die from suffocation if caught unaware outdoors. Many farmers had their land turned over to the banks and headed west to California in search of a better life.
