2 Low-pressure systems can become storms
Hurricanes: As water evaporates from the ocean, energy moves from the ocean water into the air. This energy makes warm air rise faster so tall clouds and strong winds develop. As winds blow across the water from different directions into the low, the Coriolis effect bends their paths into a spiral. ^The winds blow faster and faster around the low, which becomes the center of a storm system.

3 Hmm… Analyze…Why would a low-pressure system form on this coast? Justify your answer…

4 What is a hurricane? A HURRICANE is a tropical low-pressure system with winds blowing at speeds of 74 mi/h or more—strong enough to uproot trees. (Called typhoons or cyclones when they form over the Indian Ocean or the Western Pacific Ocean)

5 Hurricane Formation As long as the storm is above the ocean, it will continue growing stronger and bigger. Why would it continue growing larger? What are two ways that the storm could "die down”. Be able to justify these ways.

6 Structure of a Hurricane
Eye- The small center of a hurricane is clear and calm because air is moving downward. Eye Wall- Just outside the eye, the air swirls upward very quickly. It is like a wall of stormy weather. Bands of thunderstorms give the hurricane a spiral shape

10 Winter Storms Produce Snow and Ice
Most severe winter storms in the U.S. are part of low- pressure systems. Form when two air masses collide. A cP air mass that forms over snow-covered ground is especially cold, dry, and dense. It can force moist air to rise very quickly, producing a stormy low-pressure system.
