5. Leaders Continued
The president is directly elected by the French people every five years. The French Constitution declares him head of state and gives him control over foreign policy and defense. The president appoints a prime minister. The appointment requires the approval of Parliament.
The prime minister serves as head of government and is in charge of domestic policy and day-to-day governing. There is no define length for his/her term. None has exceeded 7 years to date.

France drafted and signed their constitution on October 4, 1958.
Preamble
“The French people solemnly proclaim their attachment to the Rights of Man and the principles of national sovereignty as defined by the Declaration of 1789, confirmed and complemented by the Preamble to the Constitution of 1946, and to the rights and duties as defined in the Charter for the Environment of 2004.
