Current Employment Trends in Teaching
In the 1960s and 1970s, a falling birthrate resulted in a surplus of teachers. This oversupply was recognized and connected with decreased enrollment in teacher-education programs for a time. Aspiring educators who desire to teach in a U.S. public school must be certified by the state in their chosen subject areas or grade levels. Previously, certificates usually were issued for life.
