Abstract
The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the use of research in the history of urban education in public administration and policy courses. I argue that studying history is necessary for understanding contemporary issues in educational reform and policy and these should be part of courses in public administration and policy.

2. The History of Urban Education and Public Administration and Policy
The study of the history of urban education allows for the analysis of different types of education systems and enables students to understand the historical development of administration and management of schools.
The study of the history of urban education enables students to understand the effects of different types of administration and management of schools, especially with respect to social and educational inequality and the role of schools in reducing or reproducing these inequalities.
The study of the history of urban educational policy enables students to understand how the roots of current educational debates and reforms.
