4 Irrigation-Medical Definition
Cleaning of a body cavity or wound by stream of water or other fluid

5 Purpose of irrigation in the eye
To clean : - foreign particles, - ocular discharges, - harmful chemicals from the eye

6 Materials used in this procedure
Saline Sterile cotton(Cotton ball ,pad, wiper) Syringe with needle Kidney tray

7 Materials used in this procedure
Anesthetic drop Antibiotic drop Soap oil Hand towel

8 Assessment What is irrigation? Washing the body
washing body cavity with water or saline Flushing water anywhere What is the purpose of plugging cotton balls into the patient’s ear before the procedure? Avoid water entering into ears Avoid sound into the ears Avoid dust entering into ears

9 Preparation for the procedure
Wash your hands thoroughly Identify the correct patient Ensure which eye to be irrigate Ensure the adequate light Keep sterile syringe with needle ready

10 Preparation for irrigation
Explain to the patient about the procedure Make the patient lie down supine position on the bed. Position yourself on the patient’s head side (As shown in the picture) Plug the cotton balls into the patient ears Keep the kidney tray on the irrigating eye side

11 Irrigation of the Eye Step by step procedure
Clean the patient eye using sterile cotton. Do not apply pressure on the eye ball. Provide a sterile cotton pad to the patient and ask them to hold it above the ear Take the saline filled syringe, open the eyelids wide Ask the patient to look up and pull the lower lid downwards with your finger

12 Irrigation of the Eye Step by step procedure
Flush the saline from inner canthus along the conjunctiva sac Gently flush the saline in lower fornix Hold the upper lid and Evert with your finger and ask the patient to look down Flush the saline from upper canthus of the eyelid to upper fornix

13 Irrigation of the Eye Step by step procedure
Gently flush the cornea and bulbar conjunctiva using saline water Ensure the patient comfortable Ask the patient to close their eye and clean the eye using cotton Instill antibiotic drops into irrigated eye

14 Important points Ensure that syringe tip 1 to 1.5 inches away from the eye to avoid further injury to the eye. If the patient has chemical injury instead of syringe use bottle for irrigate the eye.
