LUKE 5:27-32; Matt 9:13 Who Needs a Physician?
Sermon LUKE 5:27-32; Matt 9:13 Who Needs a Physician?
3
“This is what grace looks like, and the last place you can find it is the church.”
4
Who are the objects of grace?
How are they reached?
5
[27] After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” [28] And leaving everything, he rose and followed him.
6
[29] And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. [30] And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
7
[31] And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
8
[13] Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice
[13] Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Matthew 9:13 ESV) [32] I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:27-32 ESV)
9
Who are the objects of Grace??
Grace for those who need mercy (Godless) and The Grumblers
10
“We are bigger sinners than we dare admit, but through Christ we can be more loved and forgiven than we dare imagine.” The Godless– Luke 5:27-29; Matt 9:13
11
Jesus is not offended to be in the presence of the worst of sinners.
Jesus was attracted and attractive to the outsiders, the “sinners.”
12
We learn compassion by considering the way God bestowed compassion on us.
He did so by sending his own Son to be the perfect sacrifice for our sin.
13
WHAT ABOUT THE GRUMBLER?
The only way to access the grace of God is to admit your need, whether you are godless or a grumbler.
14
HOW ARE THE GODLESS AND THE GRUMBLER REACHED?
As we follow Christ, we get to be the Physician’s Assistant.
15
Oikos, ("extended family“) encompasses our relational worlds—anywhere from eight to fifteen people, on the average, whom God has providentially and strategically placed in our spheres of influence.
16
LIVING IN A SMALL ENOUGH WORLD TO MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
Christians who believe that it's their job to witness to everybody usually don't witness to anybody. (Tom Mercer)
17
HOW DOES IT HAPPEN? Roots, Branches, Fruit -
As we sink our Roots into the grace of God who sent his Son to be our Physician and redeemer, we become more compassionate as we connect with other believers, and we are compelled to share it with others who need the Physician.
18
STEP #1: Prayerfully, Make a list
Some people on your list will be believers; some unchurched; some you won’t even know where they are in terms of faith issues.
19
A - Admit that you’re sick – That means there is GOOD NEWS for you
B- Believe that Jesus is the only Physician / Savior who can heal you C- confess to God that you want to trust Jesus as your savior and Lord
