CASE SUMMARY (optional) Trigger Event: Mrs. Kniffen surprised by Jesus angry loud comment to his father “speak to me in English”

RECOGNIZE THE PROBLEM(S):
1. There appears to be a lack of consistent and well-established communication between school and Gonzalez family. 2. Jesus current academic plan is not benefitting him. 3. School lacks the background familiarity and strategies to work with culturally diverse families. 4. There appears to be lack of family services which school can refer Jesus’ family for further assistance.

REFAME THE PROBLEM(S):
Jesus’ Parents: Place high value on education; proud of their Mexican roots, language, and culture; afraid of exposure to negative influences at American school Jesus: struggles with his identity between school and home; wants to be accepted by his peers Mrs. Kniffen: Believes school providing adequately for Jesus’ academic needs, and that problems stem from Jesus immaturity. COMMON THREAD: All want Jesus (including himself) want to succeed academically and/or socially in school.

SEARCH FOR ALTERNATIVES (GOALS):
1. Improve communication between Jesus’ school and family. 2. Redesign Jesus’ academic plan to better fit his needs. 3. Prepare school staff with effective strategies to work with students of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. 4. Establish linkages with Community Services.
