By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.

The National Curriculum for Music aims to ensure that all pupils: perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the interrelated dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations

A curriculum which develops increasingly advanced musical responses is reliant on building up an increasingly complex musical vocabulary and understanding.

15 How to achieve this level
A Practical: Perform Head and short Improvisation within 12 Bar Blues, showing use of at least two Jazz techniques (notes from the minor pentatonic, swing rhythm, Call and Response) Accelerated  Conceptual: Able to identify stylistic features typical of specific style of Jazz and the relationship between two instruments within ensemble. B Practical: Perform main riff over 12 Bar Blues and short improvisation using limited range of notes and sense of rhythm Conceptual: Able to use terminology to describe the stylistic features of Jazz within Set Works and which instrument is being used to play them. C Practical: Able to perform main single-note riff, demonstrating sense of rhythm, controlled sound and sense of ensemble Core  Conceptual: Able to use basic terminology to describe a piece of music and recall features common to Jazz D Practical: Able to produce note at appropriate pitch and duration with some controlled sound Conceptual: Able to describe structure and instrumentation of piece of music heard and to recall key facts about more than one style of Jazz music E Practical: Able to hold instrument correctly and produce sound. Conceptual: Able to identify melody or accompaniment instrument and recall key fact about one style of Jazz music
