Pancreas Anatomy Accessory digestive organ
Enzymes for chemical digestion in the small intestine Hormones for carbohydrate metabolism Anatomy 12.5 cm x 2.5 cm Connected by 2 ducts to duodenum Head, body and tail delicate, fragile organ difficult to repair after injury difficult to diagnose and treat pancreatic diseases
4
Pancreas Histology - clusters of glandular epithelial cells
1% are endocrine cells in pancreatic islets (islets of Langerhans) glucagon (alpha cells) insulin (beta cells) somatostatin, pancreatic polypeptide (delta cells) 99% are exocrine acinar cells secrete pancreatic juice
5
Pancreas Acinar cells secrete pancreatic juice into 2 larger ducts
Larger - pancreatic duct joins common bile duct from liver, gallbladder enter duodenum at hepatopancreatic ampulla with common duct Smaller accessory duct empties into small intestine upstream
