Firstly, we will learn how to introduce yourself and say what your name is!

You only need four sentences to learn how to introduce yourself and to ask someone’s name in Japanese. Let’s see how quickly we can learn them! Hajime mashite This means “We are meeting for the first time” and so you would use this phrase the first time you meet someone.

Watashi wa (name) desu. This means “my name is” – you just need to add your name to the section in brackets! Let’s try it!

Noughts and crosses! To play, click the chosen letter. Picture is revealed and pupils should say “Hajime mashite, wa ta shi wa (name) de su – including the person’s name! If answer is wrong (and you don’t want to make the other team try it out) – click the frame and the blue letter square will reappear! If answer is correct – click the appropriate letter on either the X or O side. If you make a mistake – click the X or O again To prevent accidental clicking taking you onto the next slide (if incorporated into a lesson Powerpoint) – you need to click the lower arrow to continue to your next slide

To change picture, double click (Format -Picture tools should appear) select “change picture” and choose your own picture from one of your files. If you add clipart or add a picture directly from internet, etc, make sure your picture is no bigger than high by 5.5 wide (see Picture tools, format bar – right hand side) Hajime mashite! To say thank you in return, the other team can say
When a team answers correctly, the rest of the team can congratulate them by saying Sugoi! To say thank you in return, the other team can say Arigato!

Learning new languages and words can often take a long time and it’s easy to start to think that it’s too difficult. This is especially true when we meet new words or phrases which are longer or more difficult remember!

Yoroshiku onegai shimasu. This can mean different things but here it means something a bit like “please be nice to me”

1. Read the phrase over and over.

What’s your Japanese name?
A = ka B = tsu C = mi D = te E = ku F = lu G = ji H = ri I = ki J = zu K = me L = ta M = rin N = to O = mo P = no Q = ke R = shi S = ari T = chi U = do V = ru W = mei X = na Y = fu Z = zi Use the name code to make up your own name! Keep it a secret!!! e.g. Ann = Katoto

O-namae wa? Write your name on a bit of paper.
Fold it up and give it to the teacher. The teacher will pick a name from the hat. The class should then ask “O-namae wa?” The teacher will then say the name, e.g. 6. The class should try and work out who it is by translating the Japanese name back into English!

Songs and videos! You will find a bank of sample songs and videos which you can use to practise the vocabulary in the classroom. This is not a prescriptive list of songs and you can use or adapt them to suit the needs of your class.

Embedding the language
Keep this language active by using it regularly in class. You can ask learners to use it when doing the register for example! Start Japanese language lessons with asking learners to move around the room bowing to each other and practising their short conversations.
